At the heart of Capital One Philippines, a three-time Great Place to Work®-certified organization and one of Asia’s 2025 Best Workplaces, is a deep commitment to putting its people first.
The company invests deeply in professional development, empowering associates to grow further, and providing support they need to excel and level up. This people-first approach naturally shapes how teams feel valued and supported, and creates a strong foundation for what guides them every day: a shared sense of purpose, empowerment, and meaningful collaboration.
Here, leaders and associates come together to build, imagine, and make work matter.
Mariel: Providing Innovative and Impactful Work
As Capital One Philippines evolves as a company, it continues to reaffirm its values and purpose that ground innovative and impactful work. Mariel Arboleda-Portillo, who is part of the Communications team, believes that this is possible when empowerment is built on a foundation of trust. “The challenge is how to tell stories that bring people together and make them feel part of something bigger. Here, I’m given the space to try new things and bring bold ideas to life—knowing I have the guidance and support of my leaders. This is the kind of culture that makes showing up for work feel purposeful,” she said.

She added that high-trust leadership, the right tools, and the freedom to shape meaningful stories allow her team to transform complex ideas into experiences that genuinely connect with people and create lasting value.
“In moments like these, innovative and impactful work becomes more than a concept—it becomes a lived experience that shapes how we show up to work with purpose,” she said.

Guided by these same principles, training design lead Riz Sanglay believes that being cognizant of the company’s values and purpose gives her work more meaning.

“Our work allows us to support our associates’ professional growth through the training programs we design that set them up for success. Witnessing this growth is truly fulfilling, and I am grateful that my role allows me not just to support growth within our organization but also make a broader impact outside of it,” she said.
Living out one’s purpose, she added, means choosing to lift others, share knowledge, and create spaces where people can thrive.
JR: Cultivating Empowerment at Work
Meanwhile for leaders like JR Garcia, an Operations manager, empowerment is reflected in the day-to-day interactions that create momentum across teams. He believes that collaboration, alignment, and shared goals come alive when people are trusted to step into meaningful roles.

“As a leader, it is important to know when to guide your team but balance it with also knowing when to give them space to do well or even make mistakes so they can learn from them,” he said.
He believes that empowerment means being able to share perspectives during these interactions, especially those that can lead to meaningful improvements. “This can be through collaboration meetings or even in everyday conversations,” he said.
Highlighting a recent example of empowerment and collaboration, where his team developed a strategy to achieve the best results while working toward the same goal, he said, “Together with our onshore partners, we work as one team regardless of geography and time zone to make sure we’re aligned on our priorities. This is also about purposeful leadership—empowering associates to reach their potential by giving them opportunities to learn and develop skills.”
